Exercise Prescription One of the roles of the National Health Service is to encourage people to do more exercise, especially when they are at risk of illness or recovering from it. Exercise prescription schemes provide opportunities for fitness professionals on schemes that target people who do not normally participant in exercise. Primary Care Trusts incorporate exercise programmes into the rehabilitation programme. A person is prescribed an exercise programme by a healthcare professional that matches the frequency, intensity, duration and type of exercise to meet their fitness and health needs.

Recommended Guidelines The national guidelines are set up by the National Assurance Quality Framework for Referral Schemes: Healthcare professionals - referral specialists who should keep a regularly updated file of local physical opportunities and support groups for their prospective clients. Referral specialists – will select the most appropriate strategy to encourage exercise outside the programme. There should always be a follow up briefing at the end of the programme. The exercise programme must be tailored to the participant’s needs and the professional’s skills. Records of progress have to be filed or a logbook kept by the participant. Records of all communication must be securely filed within the exercise setting. There should be a mid- point assessment (after five or six weeks). Recommended Guidelines

monitoring The monitoring process consists of pre- assessment, the exercise programme, post- assessment and evaluation. If a client does not attend the pre- assessment, the exercise professional will follow this up with the client’s GP. During the 12 week programme the instructor will guide the client through the individually designed exercises. If the client doesn’t attend for two consecutive weeks then this will also have to be followed up by the exercise professional. All patients are provided with a programme review and a client satisfaction questionnaire. They will then be encouraged to join mainstream activity by joining activities through the Get Active schemes.
