Unit 13: Population Growth A Shortage of Fuel Wood United Nations and World Bank determined that fuel wood is the limiting resource in many developing nations. Lack wood prevents Cooking food Boiling water Heating homes May 16, 2019 Unit 13: Population Growth

Unit 13: Population Growth Water that Kills 25,000,000 people die of diseases from bad water. Dysentery Typhoid Cholera Dysentery is a disorder of the digestive system that results in severe diarrhea containing mucus or blood in the feces. If left untreated, dysentery can and usually will be fatal. Dysentery was the most common disease during the American Civil War, spread especially by contaminated water. This was before health was realized to be associated with hygiene. Typhoid fever is characterized by a sustained fever as high as 104 °F, profuse sweating, gastroenteritis, and nonbloody diarrhea. Less commonly a rash of flat, rose-colored spots may appear. May 16, 2019 Unit 13: Population Growth

Unit 13: Population Growth Shantytowns Shantytowns include houses made of plastic, packing cases and other garbage. Local water is used for drinking, bathing and sewage disposal. Four generations of women pictured here May 16, 2019 Unit 13: Population Growth

Unit 13: Population Growth The Urban Crisis As populations grow, so do cities. New residents overwhelm cities. Lack of land in the countryside push people to cities. Lack of resources force some people on the streets. May 16, 2019 Unit 13: Population Growth

Unit 13: Population Growth Social Unrest United Nations warned that rising food prices could cause worldwide turmoil and global political instability. Food price rises of more than 40% in the last year have helped spark riots and unrest in countries like Egypt, Haiti and Uzbekistan. May 16, 2019 Unit 13: Population Growth

Unit 13: Population Growth Civil Unrest The daily drama lived in Ecuador is absent from the news media as civil disobedience erupted this week in this country’s main cities against President General Lucio Gutierrez. Ecuador is living moments of some its greatest historical political tension as opposing political factions unite to regain power in Congress and the Supreme Court.
