My School of non-readers Three hundred students Five kindergarten classes Five first grade classes Four second grade classes Four mobile labs One stationary laptop lab 3 desktop computers in each classroom SMART boards in every classroom

Brand New Requirement! In 2013, the elementary teachers and students had to learn and start using a computer log on. The log on consisted of their initials and birthdate The password was their 9 digit student ID # Up to this time all you had to do was press Enter to use a computer in the elementary schools. It was a BIG adjustment and the TIS’s had to help facilitate it. I learned some tips in the process…

What Worked? Use similar log-ins for various programs Create color coded log-in cards for students (laminate) Paint all the keyboards with bright fingernail polish Practice with paper keyboards in the classroom Help teachers organize their log-ins

Have students color a keyboard Use to practice “typing” name, log in, student ID number, make it a game, race each other, etc. http://www.networktechinc.com/images/layout-rackmux-v1x.jpg

Another paper keyboard http://inkubator-teknologi.com/wp- content/uploads/2012/04/keyboard-PS2.jpg

Color Coded Log in Card Kindergarten Sample Card BACK FRONT abc Mobymax: TechSteps: Splash into Phonics: Xtramath: ABC12262007 490012345 Student First & Last Name Teacher Name

Paint The Important Keys CTRL ALT DEL ESC TAB SHIFT ENTER

Using the Mouse Paint a blob on the left mouse click button to match the Enter button Some kindergarteners’ hands are too small to work the big mouse Teach them to use the laptop touchpad Use two pointer fingers, one for clicking and one for moving the mouse

Practice with the Mouse Perfect for kindergarten: www.starfall.com Free New common core activities Bonus with subscription

Moving on to the keyboard: Check out http://www.abcya.com/ Math, Reading, Fun, Spanish Multiple grade levels Can direct the students or let them explore Free Unobtrusive ads Covers many basic skills

Create Independent Users of Technology with Symbaloo Create a Symbaloo with the links you want the students to access. http://edu.symbaloo.com/mix/primarywebsites Much easier for young students to click on the tiles

Student or Teacher Log-in Chart (hard copy) Excel File Good for older students and teachers to record usernames Can keep copies in a classroom notebook Should keep private

Managing usernames and passwords for teachers Create a Google Document of all your usernames and passwords Available anywhere Secure since you must log in to access Remember one log-in for Webtop to get to your Google docs. Can’t lose your “password notebook”

FREE Keyboarding Options Kindergarten Keyboard Zoo from ABCya Super Hyper Spider Typer First Grade Dance Mat Typing Typing Club Second Grade Typing Club (tracks progress) The Bottom Line: Third Graders need to be comfortable typing an essay for the Online Writing Assessment. We have to get them there!

Good News This Year! Only the kindergarteners have to learn how to log in! Everyone else has had some practice already.
