Subjects and verbs must always agree in number. Use a singular verb with a singular subject and a plural verb with a plural subject. Note that the subject can be a noun or a pronoun. 1. Use a plural verb with subjects joined by and 2. Use a singular verb with singular subjects joined by or or nor 3. Use a plural verb with plural subjects joined by or or nor 4. If a compound subject has both singular and plural nouns joined by or or nor, use a verb that agrees with the noun closer to it. Neither kettledrums nor the xylophone IS in the band.
