Design Principles - 9 Week 5

What are the 9 Design Principles? Balance Emphasis Movement Pattern Repetition Proportion Rhythm Variety Unity

Why use Design Principles? Provides organization of concepts to apply in structural elements of design to create and develop effective works of art of material messages in direct or indirect ways.

Balance Definition: The distribution of the visual weight of objects, colors, texture, and space. Types: Symmetrical: the elements used on one side of the design are similar to those on the other side. Assymetrical: The sidas are different but look balanced.

Emphasis Definition: The part of the design that catches the viewer’s attention using sizes, colors, textures, shapes, etc. Example: Artists will make one area stand out by contrasting it with other areas.

Movement Definition: The path the viewer’s eye takes through the work of art, often to focal point areas. Example: Movement can be directed along lines, edges, shapes, and color within the work of art.

Pattern Definition: The repetition of an object or symbol all over the work of art.

Repetition Definition: A pattern that makes the work of art seem active and creates unity within the work of art.

Proportion Definition: The feeling of unity created when all parts (sizes, amounts or numbers) relate well with each other. Example: When drawing the human figure, proportion can refer to the size of the head compared to the rest of the body.

Rhythm Definition: When one or more elements of design are used repeatedly to create a feeling of organized movement. Example: Rhythm creates a mood like music or dancing. To keep rhythm exciting and active, variety is essential.

Variety Definition: The use of several elements of design to hold the viewer’s attention and to guide the viewer’s eye through and around the work of art.

Unity Definition: The feeling of harmony between all parts of the work of art, which creates a sense of completeness.
