Describing and Measuring Motion Chapter 9, Section 1

WIK What is motion? How do you know if an object is moving?

Motion The state in which one object’s distance from another is changing. Are you moving right now?

Are You Moving? Use a reference point A place or object used for comparison to determine if something is moving Stationary objects like trees and signs make the best reference points.

What is Happening? There is a boat with passengers off the coast. A person on shore watches the boat. Who is moving? How do you know who is moving?

Relative Motion Motion is relative depending on your situation. Compared to a desk, I am not moving. Compared to the Sun, I am moving. Since I move with the Earth, it doesn’t seem like I am moving.

SI Units Important to use appropriate units to measure distance/motion. 1000 millimeters = 1 meter 100 centimeters = 1 meter 1000 meters = 1 kilometer

Which Units are Best? Scissors Room Track field Beads

WINK What is motion? What is a reference point and how does it relate to motion? Assignment for tonight: Chapter 9, Section 1 - all questions
