Displaying data in Stem-and-Leaf Plots and Histograms Lesson 62 Displaying data in Stem-and-Leaf Plots and Histograms

Stem-and-leaf plot A stem-and-leaf plot is a data display that uses some digits as "stems" and others as "leaves". The "stems" have a greater place value than the "leaves". Stem-and-leaf plots are helpful in organizing data and displaying it to show the distribution of values when there is not a large spread of values. The digits other than the last digit are the "stem". The last digit of a number is the "leaf"

example Create a stem-and-leaf plot of the data: Ages of Dancers 19,25,34,32,48,24,28,29,26,34,17,58,47,38,27,29 Step1: organize the data by each tens value. Write in ascending order. 10's 17,19 20's 24,25,26,27,28,29,29 30's 32,34,34,38 40's 47,48 50's 58 Step 2: Use the ten's digit of each group as the stem of a row. Write each one's digit as the leaf for the corresponding ten's digit. Step 3: Create a key to show how to read each entry in the plot 4 l 7 = 47

Stem leaves 1 7 9 2 4 5 6 7 8 9 9 3 2 4 4 8 4 7 8 5 8

Stem-and-leaf plots are used to show the distribution of data Stem-and-leaf plots are used to show the distribution of data. It makes it easier to identify unequal distributions. They are used to find measures of central tendency and other statistical measures because the actual data points are included in the plot. One of the statistical measures that is helpful is relative frequency. In an experiment, the number of times an event happens divided by the total number of trials is the relative frequency of that event.

Analyzing a stem-and-leaf plot Find the median from the example given earlier Find the mode Find the range Find the relative frequency of 34 Find the mean

histogram A histogram is a bar graph that displays the frequency of data in equal intervals. Each bar must be the same width and should touch the bar(s) next to it. Create a histogram from the stem-and-leaf plot earlier.

Calculator see lab 6 p. 404 You can enter the data into a list in the calculator. Change the window to best view the data On the STAT PLOT screen, select the histogram plot.

Lesson practice p. 409 a and b

Calculating frequency distributions Lesson 80 Calculating frequency distributions

Frequency distribution A frequency distribution shows the number of observations falling into several ranges of data values. Tables, graphs, tree diagrams, and lists are used to show frequency distributions. Frequency is how often something happens Discrete events have a finite number of outcomes. A compound event is an event consisting of 2 or more simple events. A compound event could be tossing heads and then tails on a coin.

Exporation p. 523 Complete in class

Using experimental probability A baseball player bats multiple times in a season. The table shows the results of each at bat. Make a bar graph that shows the frequency distribution of the data. Find the experimental probability of each outcome. OUT WALK SINGLE DOUBLE TRIPLE HOME RUN 30 36 20 9 3 1

Representing data with a table A student spins a spinner that contains 4 colors: red, red, blue, and yellow and flips a fair coin. 1) make a table to show the possible outcomes in this experiment 2) find the theoretical probability of each outcome red blue red yellow Heads RH BH RH YH Tails RT BT RT YT

Representing data with a graph Suppose that 11 cards each contain 1 letter from the word MISSISSIPPI Make a bar graph to represent the frequency distribution for all letters Find the theoretical probability of each outcome (letter)
