“Ye Shall Know That I Am The Lord” Ezekiel “Ye Shall Know That I Am The Lord”

Ezekiel Lessons 19 – Ezekiel 35-36 The Contrasting Destinies of Edom and Israel Chapter 35 details God’s plan to destroy Edom utterly and forever. In contrast, Chapter 36 contains God’s promise to restore and bless the remnant of Israel for His name’s sake. Israel and Edom were descendants of twin brothers: Jacob & Esau Edom inhabited the area around Mt. Seir (Genesis 32:3; 36:9) Bible history records the hatred and conflicts between these nations (Numbers 20:14-21; Amos 1:11-12; Psalm 137:7) Amos 1:11-12  Thus says the LORD: "For three transgressions of Edom, and for four, I will not turn away its punishment, Because he pursued his brother with the sword, And cast off all pity; His anger tore perpetually, And he kept his wrath forever.  12  But I will send a fire upon Teman, Which shall devour the palaces of Bozrah.“ Psalms 137:1-9  By the rivers of Babylon, There we sat down, yea, we wept When we remembered Zion.  2  We hung our harps Upon the willows in the midst of it.  3  For there those who carried us away captive asked of us a song, And those who plundered us requested mirth, Saying, "Sing us one of the songs of Zion!"  4  How shall we sing the LORD's song In a foreign land?  5  If I forget you, O Jerusalem, Let my right hand forget its skill!  6  If I do not remember you, Let my tongue cling to the roof of my mouth—If I do not exalt Jerusalem Above my chief joy.  7  Remember, O LORD, against the sons of Edom The day of Jerusalem, Who said, "Raze it, raze it, To its very foundation!"  8  O daughter of Babylon, who are to be destroyed, Happy the one who repays you as you have served us!  9  Happy the one who takes and dashes Your little ones against the rock!

The Territory of Edom

Petra is located in the area of ancient Edom (modern Jordan) Petra is located in the area of ancient Edom (modern Jordan). It was built by the Nabateans who overran the Edomites in the 4th century BC.

Ezekiel Lessons 19 – Ezekiel 35-36 The Destiny of Edom – Mountains perpetually desolate Mt. Seir will be laid waste by the Lord (35:1-4) Edom is condemned for its hatred and bloodshed in Israel and for its desire to possess the promised land (35:5-6, 10) Their desolation would be… Perpetual (35:7-9) Proportional to their sins (35:6, 11-15)

Ezekiel Lessons 19 – Ezekiel 35-36 The Destiny of Israel – Mountains restored and blessed The claims of other nations on Israel and their slander against her would not be allowed to stand (36:1-7) The Lord would make Israel more fruitful than ever, and His people would dwell there again (36:8-12) The land would no longer be accused of devouring the nation that inhabits it (36:13-15)

Ezekiel Lessons 19 – Ezekiel 35-36 Vindication of the Name of the Lord God’s concern for the way that Israel had sullied His name among the nations (36:16-21; cf. Romans 2:23-24; 1 Timothy 6:1; Titus 2:4-5; 2 Peter 2:1-2; contrast Matthew 5:13-16) God would gather His people back to the land, cleanse them, renew their hearts, and guide them for His name’s sake! (36:22-38) Contrary to the premillennialists, this has occurred! (Nehemiah 12:30; 10:28-29; 9:36; 6:15-16) Romans 2:23-24  You who make your boast in the law, do you dishonor God through breaking the law?  24  For "THE NAME OF GOD IS BLASPHEMED AMONG THE GENTILES BECAUSE OF YOU," as it is written. 1 Timothy 6:1  Let as many bondservants as are under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honor, so that the name of God and His doctrine may not be blasphemed. Titus 2:4-5  that they admonish the young women to love their husbands, to love their children,  5  to be discreet, chaste, homemakers, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be blasphemed. 2 Peter 2:1-2  But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them, and bring on themselves swift destruction.  2  And many will follow their destructive ways, because of whom the way of truth will be blasphemed.
