Spanish Revival Architectural Style Wen Trott-Herdrich Architecture 9/15/17

Spanish revival architectural style The spanish architectural style was influenced by many other styles as well as had many subdivisions of styles One of these subdivisions is the Spanish Revival; made popular by the Panama-California Exposition which highlighted the works of Bertram Goodhue and is credited for giving the style national attention This style was most popular before the Great Depression from the 1915’s-1930’s It was a revival of the Spanish Colonial architecture of the Spanish colonization of the Americas Casa Draecena Casa del Herrero

Style and elements The Spanish revival style was a very eclectic one, it had elements from the Spanish Baroque, Moor and Gothic as well as from the Mediterranean to create an exotic feel It’s use of contrast of the usually white walls and red, tile roofs and the dominant style of half circle arches on the windows and doorways brought unity There was an informal balance in the style but a regular rhythm with the placement of the windows There was usually an emphasis on the chimney as well as a smooth texture The lines were a mix between vertical and curved and there was little variation with color. There is an emphasis on the chimney There is a color contrast between the red trim and white walls There is an informal balance of this style The lines used were vertical and horizontal

Materials and characteristics The materials used are smooth plaster (stucco) for wall and chimney finishes, clay, tiles, concrete, canvas, wood and iron Some characteristics are low, flat roofs, concrete ornaments, porches and balconies, canvas awnings, iron trim for decor and double hung windows Some more characteristics are tiled roofs and half round arched doorways and windows The style was very detail orientated with asymmetry and wood work The typical amount of floors is 1

Purpose and popularity The purpose of this style was for residential purposes, usually among the rich This style was most common in the southwest of the U.S as well as Texas and Florida. It was not common in the northern states It was popular from the 1920’s to the beginning of the 30’s, before the Great Depression hit.

Famous architects One famous architect of this style was George Washington Smith in the 1920’s, a house he designed is the Casa del Herrero in Montecito, California, which is now a national historic landmark and museum. He was born in 1876 His house Casa Dracaena was a huge success, many people loved the style of it George Washington Smith
