Energy is said to be the ability to do work. That means the ability to make something happen. By “happen” it means to make things move or change condition.

Today is Monday, May 6, 2013 Homework: Packet due this Friday Finish reading Chapter 14 by Friday Chapter 13-14 combine test IN ONE WEEK Warm UP: - What are some different forms of energy that you can think of? Discuss this with your shoulder partner.

Goal for Today SWBAT demonstrate the ability to infer that energy can change forms and that energy can be in different forms by exploring kinetic and potential energy and other forms of energy.

Energy – the ability to do work or cause a change Can change an object’s motion, color, shape, temperature or other qualities. Some forms of energy…. Radiant (light), sound, chemical, nuclear, electrical, thermal, mechanical

Energy cannot be created nor destroyed. What does that sound similar to? Law of conservation of mass Energy can move from one object to another, changing forms Fireworks – thermal  chemical  light and sound Lamp – electrical  light

Potential and kinetic energy have an inverse relationship Example: Roller coaster As it gets higher: more potential, less kinetic (moves slower) As it gets lower: less potential, more kinetic (fast movement) Kinetic energy – energy due to motion (of waves, molecules, substances, and objects). Depends on it’s speed and mass Includes radiant, thermal, mechanical, sound, electrical

Chemical and Nuclear energy are common kinds of potential energy Potential energy – energy that is not causing any changes now but could cause changes in the future; stored energy Chemical, nuclear, gravitational, electrical, mechanical Mechanical and electrical energy can fall into either categories Chemical and Nuclear energy are common kinds of potential energy Chemical energy – energy of the electrons that form the bonds between atoms in molecules The more electrons that are involved in a bond, the more chemical energy Combustion is an example of potential chemical energy changing into other Food Nuclear energy - energy stored in the nucleus of an atom; it holds the protons together in the nucleus since their positive charges cause them to be naturally repelled from each other Nuclear power plants use this to create thermal energy to create electrical

Closing it up…. Let’s see what Tim and Moby have to say about energy…..
