Solving Proportions Using Unit Rates Objective: I can learn to use unit rates to solve a proportion.

Steps: 1. Divide to find the unit rate. * Solving for a proportion means finding a missing part of the proportion. Steps: 1. Divide to find the unit rate. 2. Multiply the unit rate in step 1 by the number in the question to solve the proportion.

Example: You want to bring to school candies for all your classmates Example: You want to bring to school candies for all your classmates. At the store, 5 Candy bars cost $6.25. How much will 17 candy bars cost? First you have to divide: $6.25 ÷ 5 to find the unit rate. Your answer is 1.25 which equals to $1.25. This means that: $6.25 = $1.25 - This is the unit rate. 5candy 1 candy bars bar Once you have found the unit rate, you have to multiply it by the number they are asking you to find in the problem. If it costs $1.25 for 1 Candy bar, then $1.25×17= $21.25 Answer: $21. 25 17 candy bars.

Example 2: Find the unit rate: 24 pages read in 6 minutes. Find how many pages will he/she read in 10 minutes ? First, Divide 24 pages = 4 pages This is the unit rate. 6min. 1 min. Second, You multiply 4 pages×10 minutes = 40 pages 10 min.

Your Example: Alejandro was paid $40. 00 for 5 hours of work Your Example: Alejandro was paid $40.00 for 5 hours of work. If he gets paid by the hour, how much will he be paid for 12 hours of work? (Hint: First find the unit rate. Then find how much in 12 hours.)

Homework: Find the unit rate Homework: Find the unit rate. Then, you multiply to find the answer of the problem. Alberto wants to buy croissants. At the bakery, you can buy 20 croissants for $30, find the cost of 1 croissant. Then find the cost for 6 croissants. The store charges $8.40 for a dozen (12) emoji pencils. Find the cost of 1 pencil. Then find how much 7 pencils cost. 4 notebooks cost $12, how much does 1 notebook cost? How much do 9 notebooks cost? 4. A boutique sells 5 designer jeans for $650. How much does 1 jeans cost? How much would 3 designer jeans cost? At Kokoa Bakery they sell 24 Nutella brownies for $20. Find the unit price. Then find the price of 15 brownies cost. (Always remember: when writing rates, money always goes on the top and the quantity below. If you are dividing, money goes in the dividend and the quantity is the divisor.)
