HOW DO YOU JUDGE THE INFORMATION? THE INTERNET Good Information Also filled with - Opinions - Misconceptions - Inaccurate information HOW DO YOU JUDGE THE INFORMATION?

5 W’s & 1 H Who? What? Where? When? Why? How?

Consider WHO is responsible for the website Who wrote the page and are they an expert? Can you contact the publisher of the site? Who is the sponsor of the site? Can you find out more about the author?

Consider WHAT is the content/subject matter Does the content appear to be accurate? Error free? Is the information presented in an objective manner? Is there real in-depth information or is it limited?

Consider WHAT is the content/subject matter Do the links support the content and are they appropriate? Does the content have educational or informational value? Does this information differ from other sites?

Consider WHERE the website resides What type of domain is it? .com, .net, .org, .gov Is it a personal page with a name in the web address? Where does the information come from? Where can I find out more information about the sponsor of the site?

Consider WHEN the website was last updated Is the information current? Does the site provide information on when it was last updated? Does a current date matter?

Consider HOW the main page looks and functions Is the page easy to understand and use? Is the page well organized? Does the page load in a reasonable amount of time? Do all the links work? Is the page free from excessive amounts of advertising?

Consider WHY the website exists Is the site trying to: - Sell Something? - Inform? - Persuade? Is this website useful for my purpose? Is the Internet the best place to find this information? Why should I use this information or page?

Conclusion There are no right or wrong answers to the questions Guide to help navigate the enormous amount of information, both good and bad, available on the Internet
