Brainstorming: While the English-speaking world is changing, English language examination boards continue to assess Non-Native English speakers’ English against Native-English speakers’ norms. Do you think there are good reasons for it?

LF on BBC Radio 4 5 Sep, 2011 Members from the Centre for Global Englishes recently appeared on the BBC Radio 4 programme 'Word of Mouth' which focused on English as a lingua franca.  This included an extensive interview with the centre director, Professor Jennifer Jenkins and with Dr. Val Hennessy, the director at International House, Bristol. Listen to the programme here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b013q210 Take notes of the main points made by Professor Jennifer Jenkins and Dr. Val Hennessy about ELF and language testing respectively.

Homework: Reading D6, pp. 223/229 (including activities) Composition: Do you believe that ELF could become complementary to other languages in Europe, rather than in competition with them? (300 words)
