How to do Subtraction with Regrouping By: Ashley and Miles
Step 1 First look at your subtraction problem below and see if you need to regroup. 782 -579 ?
Step 2 Now we begin to regroup, we start with the ones place it is the one that is (pink). First we take the 8 and take a ten from the 8 then make the 8 a 7. and then add that to the 2 in the ones place and add that 10 and the 2 to get 12. Now subtract the 12 from the 9 and that equals 3. 7 12 782 -579 3 This helps me to regroup by highlighting the numbers.
Step 3 Second, we go to the tens (black). Now lets go to the tens place. This part does no require regrouping. Now we subtract the 7 from 7 and that equals 0. 7 12 782 -579 03 This helps me by slashing out the numbers I already used.
Step 4 Finally we do the hundreds place ( Green). Now we subtract the the 7 from the 5 and equals 2. -
Check by adding 1 782 572 203 203 579 782
recommendation I recommend this strategy because you can check by adding and learn a lot to. I also find it easier to regroup and that is why we recommend this strategy.
