I will solve problems by making a graph. Main Idea/Vocabulary

The table shows the number of gallons of lemonade that were needed at the school picnic in recent years. It also shows the temperature the day of the picnic. This year, the temperature is expected to be 93°F. About how many gallons of lemonade will be needed? Example 1

Understand What facts do you know? You know the temperature and gallons of lemonade. What do you need to find? How much lemonade will be needed if it is 93°F? Example 1

Plan One way to solve the problem is to graph the ordered pairs on a coordinate grid and look for patterns in the data. Making a graph is like drawing a picture of the data. Example 1

Solve Use your plan to solve the problem. As the temperature increases, the number of gallons of lemonade increases. Place a dot midway between (91, 36) and (95, 40). The graph shows (93, 38). Answer: So, about 38 gallons of lemonade should be needed. Example 1

Check Look back at the table. List the temperatures from least to greatest. When the temperature is between 91°F and 93°F, the gallons of lemonade needed is between 36 and 40. The answer makes sense. Example 1
