Introduction To Technology

Unit 1 – Introduction To Technology Learning Objectives 1) Define Technology, Science & Engineering and understand the relationship between them 2) Learn definitions of important technology vocabulary 3) How long has there been technology? 4) What does it mean to be Technologically Literate? 5) 3 classifications of technology 6) 4 truths about technology 7) Understand who develops technology and why

Technology: Created by humans to: - extend human abilities - satisfy our wants & needs - make our lives easier Science: Study of nature & the natural world Engineering: Uses scientific discoveries to create new technology

Science, Engineering & Technology are linked together… Each one helps & relies on the other

Technology Vocabulary Invention: A new product Innovation: An improvement to an existing product Prototype: A working model of a new product or new version of an existing product Process: Steps that lead to a result

Technology Vocabulary System: A group of parts that work together in an organized way to complete a task Subsystem: A system that is part of a larger system Diagram: Picture/drawing that helps people understand how a system operates Criteria: Standards that a product or process must fulfill in order to be accepted

Technology Vocabulary Constraint: Restriction on a product or process Optimization: Creating the most effective product, system or process Tradeoff: Compromise in which you give up something in order to gain something else Patent: Prevents inventors from having their ideas stolen

How long has there been Technology? As long as there has been humans

What does it mean to be Technologically Literate? Someone who is informed about technology and is comfortable with it

3 Ways to Classify Technology Means Group Obsolete: No longer in use or no longer useful - VCRs Current: Most recent or up to date - DVDs & Blu-ray Emerging: New developments to gain an advantage over competition - Smart Watch

4 Things That Are Always True About Technology 1) Technology always evolves or changes

4 Things That Are Always True About Technology 2) The changes to technology happen very fast

4 Things That Are Always True About Technology 3) Technology has a life cycle: Emerging => Current => Obsolete

4 Things That Are Always True About Technology 4) Technology has good & bad impacts on people & society

Technology is developed by 2 types of companies or agencies: For Profit: Companies that create technology so that they can make money fro consumers (Apple, IBM, HP, Toyota, Sony) Government: Money to create technology comes from taxes (NASA, FBI, Branches of the military)
