Lesson 1.3 Question 1 WE ARE…. Patriot Strong! Who is narrating the story? What textual evidence supports your answer? The narrator is a girl who is a freshman in high school. At one point she says, “I know enough not to bring lunch on the first day of high school” and “I will be forever known as ‘that girl who got nailed by potatoes the first day.’” This shows that she in new to high school. Patriot Strong!

Lesson 1.3 Question 2 WE ARE…. Patriot Strong! The narrator’s observations are sarcastic and humorous. Do thy reflect her true feelings about others? What evidence in the text supports your answer. The narrator feels alone and judged by all. She thinks about going to a “inconspicuous corner” to hide herself and she never speaks to anyone even though there are so many thoughts in her head. There is point where she calls the football coach “Mr. Neck” which expresses her dislike for him but she does not express it aloud. She is obviously not expressing how she truly feels. Patriot Strong!

Lesson 1.3 Question 3 WE ARE…. Patriot Strong! What effect does the use of dashes in paragraph 4 have? The dashes surround “people I used to think were my friends” set apart and emphasize the author’s comment which reflects her feelings of being alone at school. Patriot Strong!

Lesson 1.3 Question 4 WE ARE…. Patriot Strong! Melinda has a vivid inner voice. What is significant, then, about the fact that she never actually speaks in this passage. Melinda choosing not to speak shows how afraid and alone she felt. She is quite articulate and funny but insecure. Patriot Strong!
