Plant cross-section
Lower epidermis- protects bottom of leaf Mesophyll- cells that make up the spongy and palisade parts of the interior of leaves Upper epidermis- protects upper part of leaf Cuticle- waxy layer of lipids that protects the top of the leaf Spongy layer- spongy layer with air spaces
Xylem- water carrying tissue Phloem- food carrying tissue
Guard cells- open and close the stomates Stomate- site of CO2 and O2 (gas) exchange
Palisade Layer- cells where most photosynthesis occurs Chloroplasts- (found in palisade cells) sites of photosynthesis
Veins (fibrovascular bundle)- Inside the vascular bundle are tubes that transport materials from place to place in the plant
