2015 Iditarod By Molly D.

Introduction The Iditarod started when children in Nome, Alaska got very sick. They had a terrible disease called Diphtheria. A group of mushers had a relay race to get the medicine for the children. That is how the Iditarod started.

Musher Jason Mackey Bib Number: 72 43 years old Born in Alaska Hometown: Mat Valley and at Coldfoot

Dogs Many mushers use Siberian Huskies for the Iditarod. They use Siberian Huskies because they are half dog and half wolf. They are very cute when they are babies but once they get older they are not that cute. All mushers start with 16 dogs and end with less than that. If you ever run in the Iditarod, you will want to buy booties so your dogs feet won’t get hurt.

Routes and Checkpoints This year, There was a new route because there was not enough snow. The race was Fairbanks to Nome. There were new checkpoints too. Checkpoints are spots where you stop to take a break.

Awards There are many awards mushers get in the Iditarod. There is the Red Lantern. The Red Lantern goes to the person who comes in last place in the Iditarod. There is also a trophy for the person who comes in first place. And there was also the Sprite of Alaska award. There are many more awards. But to me, these are the best ones.
