MAN’S IMPACT ON NATURAL RESOURCES
NATURAL RESOURCES Natural resources are materials and components (something that can be used) that can be found within the environment. Four type of natural resources are: Minerals Lumber Energy from oil and gas Fishes
MINERALS Exist within the earths surface and are usually referred to as mineral ores. Can be metal or non-metal Example will include: Limestone Gold Iron Potassium
LUMBER Lumber or timber is derived from trees. Generally referred to as wood The type of lumber will depend on the type of tree it is derived, which also determines its use.
OIL & GAS Crude Oil is derived from fossil fuels. Organisms that died millions of years ago covered beneath the earth’s surface and exposed to high pressures and temperatures resulted in the formation of fossil fuels.
FISHES Fishes living in a marine environment such as the ocean are referred to as salt water fishes Fishes living in fresh water environments such as rivers, ponds and lakes are referred to as fresh water fishes There is a diverse variety of fishes in both marine and freshwater environments.
THE IMPORTANCE OF NATURAL RESOUCES TO MAN Man is dependent on natural resources for: Food Shelter Manufacture of goods and products Energy All manufactured or man made products are derived from natural resources
SUMMARY Natural resources includes any resource that is derived from the environment Man is dependent on natural resources for survival Man’s activities are depleting natural resources Some of the uses are unnecessary Man can implement changes in their lifestyle to reduce the depletion of natural resources.
