Measures and Data Measure in m, cm, mm Convert between units Objectives Day 1 Measure in metres and centimetres. Convert between units. Day 2 Measure in centimetres and millimetres. Convert from millimetres to centimetres. Before teaching, be aware that: On Day 1 you will need a metre stick and people outlines. Before the lesson, choose children to visit other classes in school to pick two children and a teacher to draw around. Cut out and name each of the outlines. Children will need mini-whiteboards and pens. On Day 2 you will need different length pencils and a ruler marked in mm. Year 4

Measures and Data Measure in m, cm, mm Convert between units Starters Day 1 Convert units of measurement (pre-requisite skills) Day 2 Ordering numbers with one decimal place (simmering skills) Choose starters that suit your class by dragging and dropping the relevant slide or slides below to the start of the teaching for each day. Year 4

Convert units of measurement Measures and Data Measure in m, cm, mm Convert between units Starter Convert units of measurement Pre-requisite skills – to use this starter, drag this slide to the start of Day 1 Display ‘Measurement cards’ (see next slide or starters resources) one at a time. Ask questions such as, How many centimetres are in a metre? Children write down the answer with the correct unit of measurement (100cm). Show, check and repeat. Year 4

Ordering numbers with one decimal place Measures and Data Measure in m, cm, mm Convert between units Starter Ordering numbers with one decimal place Simmering skills – to use this starter, drag this slide to the start of Day 2 Choose five children to each write a number between 4 and 5, with one decimal place, e.g. 4.3. They show the rest of the class. Children work in pairs to order the numbers from smallest to largest. The five children order themselves to check. Repeat with different children/ranges of numbers. Year 4

Measures and Data Measure in m, cm, mm Convert between units Objectives Day 1 Measure in metres and centimetres. Convert between units. Year 4

Day 1: Measure in metres and centimetres; Convert between units. Now I’ll choose someone to use the metre stick to measure the height in metres and centimetres. Use this metre stick to help you to estimate how tall the person is. This stick is one metre long. Remember that 100cm = 1m. Convert each height to metres only, e.g. 1m 34cm to 1.34m How could we record this height in metres only? Before the lesson, choose children to visit other classes in school to pick two children and a teacher to draw around. Cut out and name each of the outlines. Show children a metre stick, remind them that 100cm = 1m. Hold up one of the outlines. Discuss how tall they think this person is. Show the metre stick to help estimate. Choose a child to measure the height in metres and centimetres. Record the measurement in the ‘Height’ recording table. Repeat for each outline. Children can now go on to do differentiated GROUP ACTIVITIES. You can find Hamilton’s group activities in this unit’s TEACHING AND GROUP ACTIVITIES download. WT/ARE: Convert height measurements from cm to m and cm. GD: Convert distance measurements (aeroplane heights) from m to km. Year 4

The Practice Sheet on this slide is suitable for most children. Differentiated PRACTICE WORKSHEETS are available on Hamilton’s website in this unit’s PROCEDURAL FLUENCY box. WT: Children complete Table 1 and try Table 2. ARE: Children complete Tables 1 and 2. GD: Children complete Tables 2 and 3. Year 4

Measures and Data Measure in m, cm, mm Convert between units Objectives Day 2 Measure in centimetres and millimetres. Convert from millimetres to centimetres. Year 4

Day 2: Measure in centimetres and millimetres; Convert from millimetres to centimetres. Could we measure a pencil in metres? Look at these pencils. What unit of measurement could we use to measure these? Yes, but it’s not the most sensible unit to choose. What is the benefit of using millimetres over centimetres? Using millimetres will give a more accurate measurement, so helping us to tell between pencils that are the same whole number of centimetres. We need to line the end of the pencil up with 0 on the ruler. Show children some pencils of different lengths. Demonstrate, making an accurate measurement by lining up the 0 of the ruler with the end of the pencil or show on the IWB with the pictures of a pencil and ruler so children can see the scale divisions. How long is the pencil in millimetres? Year 4

Day 2: Measure in centimetres and millimetres; Convert from millimetres to centimetres. We need to divide 125 by 10 by moving each digit one place to the right. What is the pencil’s length in centimetres? Remember that 1cm = 10mm. We need to line the end of the pencil up with 0 on the ruler. 125mm 12.5cm Show children some pencils of different lengths.

How long is the pencil in millimetres? What is the pencil’s length in centimetres? Remember that 1cm = 10mm. 108mm We need to line the end of the pencil up with 0 on the ruler. 10.8cm Repeat with a pencil of different length or use the slide above. Year 4

Day 2: Measure in centimetres and millimetres; Convert from millimetres to centimetres. How long is the pencil in millimetres? What is the pencil’s length in centimetres? Remember that 1cm = 10mm. 134mm We need to line the end of the pencil up with 0 on the ruler. 13.4cm Repeat with a pencil of different length or use the slide above. Today would be a great day to use a problem-solving investigation – Timeline – as the group activity, which you can find in this unit’s IN-DEPTH INVESTIGATION box on Hamilton’s website. Alternatively, children can now go on to do differentiated GROUP ACTIVITIES. You can find Hamilton’s group activities in this unit’s TEACHING AND GROUP ACTIVITIES download. WT/ARE/GD: Measure lines in mm and convert them to cm. Year 4

The Practice Sheet on this slide is suitable for most children. Differentiated PRACTICE WORKSHEETS are available on Hamilton’s website in this unit’s PROCEDURAL FLUENCY box. WT: Measure lines in millimetres and convert them to centimetres (whole cm, or multiple of 5mm), Sheet 1. ARE: Measure lines in millimetres and convert them to centimetres, Sheet 2. GD: Measure lines in millimetres and convert them to centimetres, Sheet 3. Year 4

Well Done! You’ve completed this unit. Measures and Data Measure in m, cm, mm Convert between units Well Done! You’ve completed this unit. Objectives Day 1 Measure in metres and centimetres. Convert between units. Day 2 Measure in centimetres and millimetres. Convert from millimetres to centimetres. You can now use the Mastery: Reasoning and Problem-Solving questions to assess children’s success across this unit. Go to the next slide. Year 4

Problem solving and reasoning questions Look at these lengths. Estimate their accuracy. Tick if they look correct… • Car length: 4.5m • Cat, nose to tail: 0.42m • Mobile phone: 15mm • Wax crayon 100mm • Teaspoon: 200cm Write the missing numbers or units. 3.4cm = mm cm = 2.35m 10m = 1000 129mm = cm 3400mm = 3.4 Year 4

Problem solving and reasoning: Answers Look at these lengths. Estimate their accuracy. Tick if they look correct… • Car length: 4.5m  • Cat, nose to tail: 0.42m  • Mobile phone: 15mm (more likely 15cm) • Wax crayon 100mm  • Teaspoon: 200cm (that’s 2m so unlikely!) Write the missing numbers or units. 3.4cm = 34mm 235cm = 2.35m 10m = 1000cm 129mm = 12.9cm 3400mm = 3.4m Year 4
