Measurement Part 3
VOLUME of a SOLID Volume is the amount of space an object takes up. To find the volume of a solid (cube) Volume = Length x Width x Height Example: 2cm x 3cm x 6cm = 36cm3
VOLUME (Continued) Volume of an irregular shape- we use water called Water Displacement We observe the change in water as it rises.
Subtract the water level with the object minus the water level without the object to find its volume. Displacement of water 4mL 3mL 4mL - 3mL = 1 mL = 1cm3
Water Displacement Find the volume of the following objects: Object Volume before object (mL) Volume after object (mL) Volume of object (ml= cm3) Nut Bolt Blue pen Dice
VOLUME of a LIQUID The base unit for measuring the volume of liquids is the liter (L). Graduated cylinders are used to measure liquids.
Meniscus The curved line of water is called a meniscus. Read the meniscus at the bottom of the curve.
Determining the Scale 1. Choose two numbers on the graduated scale and subtract them. 2. Count the spaces between the two numbers. 3. Take your answer from #1 and divide it by the number of spaces (#2). 4. This answer tells you the volume that each line represents.
Example What is the volume of the liquid in this graduated cylinder? 1. 100 - 90 = 10 2. 5 spaces 3. 10/5 = 2 So, each line represents 2 mL. There is 96 mL of liquid in this graduated cylinder. 100mL 90mL 80mL 70mL 60mL
Try It! Chose a number. (6mL) Subtract the next # below it. (6mL - 5mL = 1mL) Count the spaces between the two numbers. (10 spaces) Divide 1mL/10 spaces. (1/10 = .1mL) Volume of the liquid = 5.7mL 6mL 5mL
