1 - Toxicology of Alcohol Unit 6: Toxicology April 22, 2015 Sanders

Alcohol Ethyl alcohol is most heavily abused in the United States. Ethanol alcohol is the principal type of alcohol found in alcoholic beverages, produced by the fermentation of sugars by yeasts. It is a psychoactive drug and one of the oldest recreational drugs used by humans. May 29, 2019 Unit 6: Toxicology

Absorption Alcohol appears in the blood within minutes after it has been taking by mouth. Concentration increases after it is being absorbed from the stomach and the small intestine in the bloodstream. May 29, 2019 Unit 6: Toxicology

Alcohol in the Circulatory System Alcohol is ingested and absorbed in the stomach. 20 percent of the alcohol is absorbed and distributed throughout the body. The rest of the alcohol is absorbed in the intestines. May 29, 2019 Unit 6: Toxicology

Aeration The body expels alcohol from the blood thorough the lungs. Exhalation expels both carbon dioxide (CO2) and alcohol. May 29, 2019 Unit 6: Toxicology

Oxidation Oxidation and excretion is the means of eliminating alcohol from the body. Oxidation takes place almost entirely in the liver. May 29, 2019 Unit 6: Toxicology
