Impact of the New Deal Roosevelt said he may not succeed but he had to try People got help, jobs, and programs were created like Social Security and unemployment Unsuccessful at unemployment (rates rose instead of decreased)

More impacts Creation of roads, bridges, dams, and public buildings 2,500 hospitals and 6,000 schools were built The relationship between government and the people has changed forever Expansion of government including new programs and new government agencies

Limits of the New Deal Roosevelt’s programs could be seen as a contradiction – he wanted to build, ‘a country in which no one is left out.’ His relief programs were temporary and never meant to be a permanent solution Pay scales were low They didn’t want to pay too much and discourage people from finding other jobs

The End of the New Deal The programs launched in 1933 came to an end in 1938 Court packing hurt Roosevelt Congress wasn’t happy with Roosevelt and kept him from gaining too much power What type of government allows the leader to have complete power?

Minimum wage The Fair Labor Standards Act Congress passed a minimum wage and a maximum work week. It wasn’t always the 40 hour work week we have today. What was it in 1938? This also provided a set rate for overtime. What is overtime? How much do you get paid?

1938 Roosevelt tried to convince people to vote for the opponents in the Senate elections of 1938 In every case, it backfired and people elected the incumbent What is the incumbent?

The End to the Depression Europe was going back to war and needed supplies Americans went back to the factories to produce items for the war WWII ended the Great Depression, not Roosevelt!
