Why do things get warmer and colder?

1. Let’s think back!

1. Let’s think back! What will happen to the snowman with or without the hat and coat? Which is the hottest part of the picture? Which is the coldest? How will this change? What will make it change more quickly or more slowly? You have five minutes to work out an explanation! Everyone in the group must agree!

2. Falling paper clips Why did the paper clips fall off? Why did the paper clip in the middle fall off before the one at the end? Do you think heat travels best through solids, liquids or gases? Why do you think this? What have you just seen that can help you decide?

3. Magic ice What does the ice need in order to melt? Why did the water boil yet the ice did not melt? How well did the heat from the water reach the ice? What does this suggest about how well water conducts heat? Which of the statements on your sheet are helpful to you in explaining this?

4. Plenary Look at each group’s explanation of why the ice did not melt. Does the explanation make sense? Is it supported by evidence? Is there anything you do not agree with? What might you say to each group about their explanation? How could your own group’s explanation be improved?
