Problem solving

Procedure Get to know the problem (what) Brainstorm on ideas & solutions (how) Evaluate, pick and develop solution

Techniques (steps 1 & 2) Formulating ‘how’ questions. As many as you can. “5 wh’s and 1 h”: Answer questions with: who, what, where, when, why and how. Brain writing For new ways of looking at things

Redefining a problem An example Formulating ‘how’ questions How can we fix this machine How can we adapt to this new situation Structuring the problem Define situation (where are we) Goal (where would we like to be) Means (ways to get there)

Brain writing The procedure Write the problem on a large sheet of paper. Use large letters. Pass on the piece of paper. People should not talk to each other. Everyone writes down their ideas. Set a time limit, e.g. 1 minute. Repeat step 2. Select the most promising ideas to work on.

Conclusion Use these techniques: To get to know, redefine a problem To get a grip on the problem To collect ideas and possible solutions Take one step at a time To take the pressure off To regain control
