Wrt 105: practices of academic writing Dr. Rusty Bartels Friday, September 14th, 2018 Week 3, Day 3

Overview Overview & Attendance Freewrite Reading Process Style Wrap-up

Freewrite What is writing like for you? Describe your writing process. Share with a neighbor. At least 3 voices to share with the class.

Lamott I want us to be able to use Lamott’s piece in two ways: To think about the process of writing To consider the ways that she uses language and style in her writing

Lamott - Process How has reading about Lamott’s process influenced how you think about your own? Begin by talking with a neighbor and outlining what Lamott describes her process as. How does this compare to what you’ve done in the past? Or been taught to do. Reflect, freewrite or with a neighbor, how are you thinking about your writing process now? Is there anything you are thinking about doing differently?

Lamott - Style Let’s first think about the rhetorical situation of her essay: Audience Purpose Persona Genre Context Her as an author You as a reader Mode & Medium How do these elements (to the left) compare to other texts you’ve been assigned, either in this class or in your prior coursework?

Lamott - Style What are some tools or techniques that she uses in her own writing? Are any of them things you would try?  For example: sentence length

Wrap-up Today we: Reviewed Lamott, and talked about writing process, and examples of different stylistic elements/techniques Remember: down draft, up draft, polished draft Next time: Peer review: bring in your draft at whatever stage it is at. The more you have, the more you will get out of the session. If bringing a hard copy: bring two copies, double spaced If working digitally: bring a device that you are willing to share w/ your peer (don’t assume your reviewer will have their own laptop with them)
