Cellular Respiration

Objectives To understand where cell respiration takes place. To learn the key molecules in respiration To understand the process from which cells obtain their energy To identify and understand the concepts of aerobic and anaerobic

Can we photosynthesize? How do we obtain energy? But how do we turn food into energy?

Cellular Respiration Process that breaks down food molecules to produce ATP Takes place in Mitochondria

ATP ADP resists addition of 3rd phosphate Large excess of energy released when ATP releases phosphate to become ADP

Stages of Cell Respiration Glycolysis Citric Acid Cycle Electron Transport Chain

Glycolysis Series of reactions in cytoplasm that break down glucose (6 carbon sugar) Creates two pyruvic acids (3 carbon) Anaerobic- no oxygen required Occurs OUTSIDE the mitochondria!

Glycolysis Continued NAD+ used as electron carrier to ETC Uses up two ATP Produces four ATP Net gain of two ATP

Citric Acid Cycle (CAC) Pyruvic Acid (from glycolysis) loses CO2 combines with enzyme A This forms Acetyl CoA Starting Point of CAC

Citric Acid Cycle Cont. One ATP produced for every turn Takes place in Mitochondria NAD+, FAD used as electron carriers to ETC Aerobic – oxygen required

Electron Transport Chain NADH, FADH2 provide energized electrons Electrons passed on through series of proteins Final acceptor is oxygen This creates H2O PRODUCES 32 ATP

Write this in words as well! EQUATION C6H12O6 + 6O2= 6CO2+6H2O+ATP Write this in words as well! Pssssst………. Know this!!

Overall Glycolysis- anaerobic Citric Acid Cycle- aerobic Electron Transport Chain- aerobic NET PRODUCTION OF 36 ATP

Lactic Acid Fermentation No Oxygen Replaces NAD+ in lack of oxygen So ETC may continue Lactic acid builds up in muscles

Alcohol Fermentation Produces CO2 and Ethanol Example- Yeast in bread making

Take Home Point Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration are interdependent on each other. The reactants of photosynthesis are the products from cell respiration The reactants of cell respiration are the products from photosynthesis
