How To Build A Better Snack! Emily Hulse

Some of my favorite foods? Who Am i? - Mrs. Hulse’s sister-in-law! - Student at Marywood University - Food lover - Dog lover - Summer lover - Music lover Some of my favorite foods?

Some of your favorite foods?

Food = energy - Food gives us energy! - Eating healthy can make us feel full, happy, and ready to take on the day - Energy can be measured in food through something called a kilocalorie, or more commonly, a calorie - Calories can sound confusing and strict, but they shouldn’t be misused - Instead, they should be understood! - Calories aren’t bad – we need them for after school sports, for gym class, to concentrate when Mrs. Hulse is teaching, for growing tall and strong

Calories in Foods - Some foods have more calories (more energy) inside of them - Some healthy foods can have more calories than unhealthy foods, just like some unhealthy foods can have more calories than healthy foods - As a general rule: even though some fruits and vegetables have more calories than some packaged foods, they are still better to eat - Some foods are more nutrient dense – they have less calories in a bigger size! - As a nutrition student, I can show you foods and food groups that will meet your calorie needs so you don’t have to worry about it

What are the 5 food groups and what is MyPlate?

What are some examples of foods in these categories? The 5 Food Groups - Fruits - Vegetables - Grains - Dairy - Protein What are some examples of foods in these categories?

Dragonfruit Starfruit Litchi Some craaaazy fruits Starfruit Litchi

Other craaaazy foods Purple yams Mushrooms

Why use MyplatE? - To make sure you are eating the right amount of calories at each meal for energy - Can be used with any meal: breakfast, lunch, or dinner - Can be used with snacks, too! - MyPlate is the building block of a healthy meal

Using Myplate for an after school snack - Combine 2 to 3 of the food groups - Get creative! Fruits, vegetables, protein, dairy, grains

Ready for a game? - Grab a partner - Grab a set of food flash cards - Combine 3 flash cards to make 1 snack, one from each food group - Name your new snack something special! - Make as many of these snacks as you can in 5 minutes

Some of My answers…... - Emily’s Famous Fruit Pie: 1 apple, 2 scoops peanut butter, ½ handful of chocolate chips Fruit, protein, dairy - Breakfast at 3 pm: 1 cup of yogurt, 1 banana, and ½ handful of cheerios Dairy, fruit, grain - Ants on a Stick: 2 celery sticks, 2 scoops Nutella, ½ handful of raisins Vegetable, protein, fruit - Hittin’ the Ranch: 1 cucumber, 3 scoops ranch dressing, ½ handful of cherry tomatoes Vegetable, dairy, vegetable

What were some of your snacks?

Now that you’ve made your own snacks… - You can see how so many common after school snacks DON’T follow MyPlate! - Snacks like Goldfish and Cheetos only have 1 food group, which means they aren’t giving you enough energy and they aren’t nutrient dense - Some snacks, like fruit snacks, add extra ingredients from other food groups which can make them unhealthy - By making your own snacks, you get to be creative and enjoy new foods while getting proper nutrition

Who would like to do this in real life?

So, how can you make this happen? - Go to the grocery store with your parents! - Ask to shop in the produce section – the section with fresh fruits and vegetables - Plan ahead so you aren’t too overwhelmed in the grocery store - Ask your parents to make snacks with you, or show them your skills instead - Make a competition with your friends over who can make the best snacks using 3 categories on the MyPlate - Show your friends and family that you are starting to cook for yourself!

Remember – Safety First - Always wash your hands before handling food - Making a snack can be hard when you do not know how to use the proper tools - If you do not know how to properly use a knife, blender, or other device make sure to ask a parent or other adult - Wash produce (fresh foods) thoroughly before using them to get rid of germs - Ask an adult if one of your ingredients looks different or smells bad to make sure that food is okay to use in your snack - Staying safe = a good snack = lots of energy!!!

Look at some inspiration

YUM!

Any questions?

Thanks for listening!
