Types of Reactions (11.2) 1) Combination (Synthesis) 2) Decomposition 3) Single Replacement 4) Double Replacement 5) Combustion

Classwork (in notebook) Pg. 339 #24 Pg. 347 #51 (remember the reactants and products for combustion reactions) Pg. 347 #52

Writing chemical equations Chemical reaction – one or more reactants change into one or more products. Reactant – The substances that react in a chemical reaction. Product – The substances that are produced in a chemical reaction

Reactants  Products Writing Word Equations Iron reacts with oxygen to produce iron(III) oxide Iron + Oxygen  Iron (III) oxide Fe + O2  Fe2O3

The arrow () represents the change. Writing Word Equations The arrow () represents the change. Yields Produces Gives off Makes Forms Breaks down

Things to remember/note 1) Do you name using molecular or ionic naming system? 2) Most transition metals need a roman numeral to represent charge. 3) Check the polyatomic ion chart on pg. 257 for help. 4) Did you use the correct transition words? 5) Elements by themselves are just the element name.

Practice How would you write the following into a chemical equation? Sodium combines with chlorine to produce sodium chloride. Solid iron(III) oxide and carbon monoxide gas produce iron metal and carbon dioxide gas.

What would sentences for the following equations look like? Practice What would sentences for the following equations look like? Na2O + H2O  NaOH CS2 + O2  CO2 + SO2

Practice Based on classwork/homework from yesterday, write sentences to represent the chemical equations.
