How to use number lines to identify equivalent fractions. 10-6: Equivalent Fractions and the Number Line Today we will learn… How to use number lines to identify equivalent fractions.

Today we are going to use number lines to find equivalent fractions Today we are going to use number lines to find equivalent fractions. First, work with a partner to fill in these number lines so we can use them today.

Lets try the first one together Suppose a strip of paper has been folded into four equal parts, and ¼ is shaded blue. Another strip of paper the same size and shape has been folded into eight equal parts and 2/8 is shaded orange. Using a number line, how can you show that ¼ and 2/8 are equivalent (equal) fractions?

What fraction can you find that is equivalent to 2/8? Try this with a partner Using your number line paper, what fractions can you find that are equivalent to 3/6? What fraction can you find that is equivalent to 2/8?

What fraction can you find that is equivalent to 2/3? Do this on your own Using your number line paper, what fraction can you find that is equivalent to 3/4? What fraction can you find that is equivalent to 2/3?

Draw a Picture to Solve Carefully read the problem. Underline the question. [Bracket] important words and numbers.  Eliminate unnecessary information.   Solve and check your work. Two pizzas were cut into sixths. Andrew, David, and Katie shared the pizzas equally. How many sixths did each friend get? Draw a picture to help you solve the problem.   Whole Group Lesson 10-3
