Response #1- “Drive”

What is currency?   something that is in circulation as a medium of exchange. Currency can come in many forms. With your partner, come up with examples of “currency”. Money, stocks, knowledge, hit points, reputation…

The Currency of School What is the currency of school? Discuss with your partner and WRITE DOWN what you feel it is. Your written statement should read: The currency of school is _________.

What kind of teacher do you want? Do you want a teacher who uses rewards and punishments? Do you want a teacher who gives you the opportunity to do your own thing? Do you want a teacher who gives grades for every assignment? Write down a statement that describes the teacher you want. Ex. I want a teacher who gives me specific directions, clear tasks, and gives me a percentage for all assignments.

Watch this! Making notes (mental or otherwise) is advised as you may wish to refer to this in your response . http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u6XAP nuFjJc

So… If a task is “straight forward”, then management through grades is a great way to motivate. ex. Learn the definitions of simile and metaphor. Test on Tuesday. If the task requires creative thought, grades are NOT an effective way to motivate. ex. Write a short story that incorporates a theme linked to redemption.

Response #1= “Drive” On your paper that you’ve been using to make notes: 1. Make sure you have the title “Drive” and your name clearly at the top. 2. Write a response exploring anything that has been discussed during this presentation. You may wish to include your thoughts on: Grades (in general, or as a motivation for learning) What kind of teacher you would like for this class Use the rubric that you have just been given to guide your response. This response MUST be given to McDonald before you leave class today.
