What is happening to the CIF? Framework – approval of initial proposals Public consultation – Oct 11 – Jan 12 Pilot inspections - Autumn 11 and Spring 12 Consultation and pilot findings – published Mar 12 Framework - published Jun 12 New framework - launched Sept 12 Questions if required from panel to stimulate discussion… ·       Future challenges:   ·         1

What we know is already happening The Education Bill has required changes to school inspections. These will now focus on: achievement quality of teaching behaviour and safety quality of leadership Questions if required from panel to stimulate discussion… ·       Future challenges:   ·         2

What does this mean for us? The implications for learning and skills are not clear but the consultation might well include: the continuation of limiting grades whether separate grades should continue for areas such as capacity to improve, safeguarding and safety and equality and diversity Questions if required from panel to stimulate discussion… ·       Future challenges:   ·         3

Measuring data The importance of particular measures is changing. The coalition government is abandoning CVA and does not believe in equivalences of qualifications. The widening participation measure is also being replaced with calculations based on the index of multiple deprivation (IMD). However it should not be assumed that these confer expectations of either higher or lower achievement. Attainment measures, success rates, remain key and timely success of more significance on shorter programmes, however, destinations are also likely to be of increasing importance. Questions if required from panel to stimulate discussion… ·       Future challenges:   ·         4

The least successful teaching and learning Tutors talk too much, suppress learner’s contribution and content is unimaginative Questioning is rarely penetrating enough to make learners think hard enough to develop their ideas, nor to research, explore or communicate their ideas with sufficient autonomy Too many learners remain unchallenged and their own expectation of what they can achieve are not extended sufficiently Workplace training is not always sufficiently planned and linked to the off the job training to make best use of the opportunities available Questions if required from panel to stimulate discussion… ·       Future challenges:   ·         5

Outstanding teaching and learning is about… Passionate and enthusiastic teachers who use their extensive expertise to inspire a culture of learning and challenge Highly effective planning leading to brisk, imaginative teaching that ensures learners differing needs are met Teachers’ expectations of their learners are high, checks on learning are frequent, questions are probing, and work is appropriately challenging Learners who are fully involved in evaluating and reflecting on their own learning and making good progress Learners who need additional help being identified early and effective support being provided promptly Questions if required from panel to stimulate discussion… ·       Future challenges:   ·         6
