Solar Water Heating System Progress Presentation Meghan Hanington, Blake Meech, Alexander MacDonald, Connor Hanna & Alex MacDonald
Review of Goals Determine the current hot water consumption in MacIsaac Hall and identify available space in the mechanical room and on the roof of the building. Determine the proper methods for integrating our solar water heating to the existing steam based heating system. Decide on long-term or short-term hot water storage Find the annual solar radiation in Antigonish Contact local suppliers and continue to research financing options
Challenges Meeting with Josh Bouchie was delayed because of conflicting schedules and reading week. MacIsaac Hall mechanical room inspection was also delayed. Meeting with Mohammad was limited due to the delay.
Meeting with Mohammad Azad Thursday, February 15th Recommended short-term hot water storage instead of long-term. Thermodynamic calculations can be used to determine pump and storage tank capacity.
Meeting with Josh Bouchie & Kevin Latimer Wednesday, February 28th MacIsaac Hall tour (mechanical room and roof) Design plans for two similar solar hot water projects Available chimney space Problems to be looked at further: Glycol overheating Drainback system vs heat release Recirculation of hot water

Accomplishments MacIsaac Hall inspection Short term hot water storage will be used Available room for storage tanks in mechanical room Available roof space is approximately 104m^2 Data collection for solar radiation on campus Estimate of current hot water consumption and energy demand Set parameters on system design
Moving Forward... Contact Thermo-Dynamics Ltd. Pricing and specifications of products Continue to research financing options for project Second meeting with Mohammad and Josh Engineering analysis Heat transfer in collectors and storage tanks Determine methods for connecting our SWH system to the recirculation piping
