Using commas correctly If sentences Using commas correctly

Subordinate and main clauses If sentences are made up of a main clause and a subordinate clause. The main clause can make sense on its own. The subordinate clause does not make sense on its own.

You can go to the shops if you are good. Can you spot the main clause? If the subordinate clause is at the start of the sentence, we use a comma after the last word. If you are good, you can go to the shops. What has happened to the sentence above?

Make your own if sentences You can have a pudding if you finish your main course. You will get a good job if you work well at school. Remember to eat a balanced diet if you want to be healthy. Come to Alton Towers if you are bored! Visit our website if you need more information.

Over to you! Now make up your own sentence with if in the middle of the sentence. Now move if to the beginning of the sentence and see what happens. Remember to only use a comma if you start the sentence with ‘if’.
