Why learn how to write a résumé?

Well, what kind of job do you want? Résumé REQUIRED Professional, technical, administrative and managerial jobs. (Sales positions, Secretary, and other office and business jobs) Résumé SOMETIMES REQUIRED Skilled jobs (Baker, Hotel Clerk, Electrician) Résumé NOT REQUIRED Unskilled, quick turnover jobs (Fast Food Server, Laborers, Machine Loader, etc.)

Résumés A résumé is a list of a person’s qualifications and persuades an employer to give an interview FOUR MAJOR PARTS Name, address, email, etc. Education Relevant experience and qualifications References

What NOT to do Don’t include personal information, such as age, martial status, photos, etc. Don’t mention specific courses unless they are directly relevant to the job Don’t include salary of past jobs Don’t irrelevant mention jobs or activities Don’t use an unorganized format that will make you look unprofessional

What to do Do mention your degree Do explain briefly how each of your past jobs or activities relate to the desired job Do include special skills and abilities (these may not be from actual job experience) Do you use a clear format that makes you look efficient and professional Do make it easy and quick to read. Edit!

Why is it important to edit? Some real life mistakes people have made on their résumés: “Speak English and Spinach.” “Instrumental in ruining entire operation for a western chain company.” "Answer phones, file papers, respond to customer emails, and take odors.“

I’ve never had a job! What am I supposed to write? Remember that part of writing a résumé is selling the qualities you do have Think of the skills or hobbies you have and try to relate them to a specific job. Think of school projects and clubs, family responsibilities, volunteer work, etc. that you’ve done that demonstrates these skills

Employers are eager to talk with people with your English skills in. . . communication critical analysis problem solving working independently and collaborating in groups managing information summarizing and presenting data meeting deadlines and managing time

Take out a piece of paper Pick any job that you might want to apply to List THREE qualifications you have for this job and why. EXAMPLE: Tour Guide “Intercultural communication skills: studied 4 years English under foreign and Chinese teachers simultaneously.”

Activity Choose a partner Read over my sample résumé Answer the questions on a piece of paper

Homework Your resume is due Week 15 in your writing portfolio. You may use a “résumé template” which is a pre-organized format for a résumé. Find them on any search engine. Use any résumé template you want. Just make sure it’s organized, easy to read, and free of mistakes. Continue working with Blog Group for Week 15 presentation
