Figure 1 The “Domino Theory” of Hunger Food deprivation reduces the production of leptin by fat. This removes the inhibitory effect of leptin on corticosterone secretion by the adrenal gland (through a mechanism still unresolved), leading to increased corticosterone secretion. The increased corticosterone stimulates the production of type 2 deiodinase in hypothalamic tanycytes, leading to increased local production of T3. T3 diffuses to nearby NPY/AgRP neurons (adjacent, but shown spatially separate here for clarity), where it stimulates UCP2 production.
