Meteors and impact By spencer cook

Our planet receives many meteor impacts every day but most are to small to really affect our planet and life on earth. But we occasionally will be hit by a meteor that have the ability to wipe out all life on earth A meteor impact is a high risk for earth. We only receive one of these blows every million years like clockwork but because of its devastation it is considered a high risk. We have received a major meteor strike every million years and these impacts have had a great impact on our environment by changing the landscape and wiping out the life to make room for the human race With out these impacts we would not be here today for meteors have formed and reshaped our planet in many ways without meteor strikes our planet may not have obtained the water resource and also life that is on earth today. http://geophysics.ou.edu/solid_earth/notes/solar_system/Ames3.htm

A meteor varies in different sizes and can be destructive from as small as a car to a football stadium the size of the actual rock creates and impact zone When an impact event happens, the enormous kinetic energy of the asteroid or meteorite is partly transferred to the Earth but largely converted into heat and sound, creating pressure waves travelling radially outward and this causes many trees and the surrounding to change and heat up. When a meteor impacts the earth it cause a lot of heat and kinetic energy. But a meteor strike actually has a cooling affect on the planet, when it impacts the surface of the earth it actually releases aerosols that block out the sun which will block the incoming heat from the sun http://pics-about-space.com/dinosaurs-asteroid-impact-crater?p=3

If we get hit with a meteor and it is not big enough to wipe out all life on earth we will experience many affects on earth. The blast radius will kill off many people and knockdown anything in the nearby area with enough force of 10000 nuclear bombs. This will throw dust and aerosols in the air which would cool the planet and kill off plants and crops which will lower our food source. The cooling planet will change and could throw us into an ice age depending on if the meteor has enough force to knock the planet off its axel. If the meteor hits in the ocean it would cause tsunami tides to surge from the center and impact coast around the impact zones causing flooding and high tides to flood inland. http://msnickellecavid.blogspot.com/2013_11_01_archive.html

The Chelyabinsk meteor entered Earth's atmosphere over Russia on 15 February 2013 were it ripped across the sky were a blinding light appeared that was brighter than the sun. Although it did not hit any cities it could be seen from up to 100 km away. The object explodes in midair at an attitude of 90,000 feet and created a shock wave and a cloud of dust and smoke. Although that it did not cause a direct effect on the surrounding area there were many indirect affects many people had to be treated with cuts from glass, car accidents, and even collapsed building that fell on people many people were injured and. 1,491 people were hospitalized the air burst from the meteor cause extensive ground damage. Gases that were blown when the meteor exploded caused people to become sick and ill. Also with there being snow on the ground many people got severe ultraviolet burns from the flash although there were no deaths the indirect affects has caused more damage to the people and have changed tier life’s forever. The impacts that a meteor has are massive and cause direct and indirect disasters that will be devastating to everyone. The size of the meteor is important and even a small meteor can cause major damage to the impact sight and even the area if it exploded in midair.
