DUNS: Who needs a DUNS Number? What is a DUNS Number? You, if you are “entering a cooperative, contribution, interagency, partnership agreement, a federal contract, or grant agreement.” What is a DUNS Number? Dun & Bradstreet’s “Data Universal Numbering System”. A copyrighted, proprietary means of identifying business entities on a location – specific basis. A unique nine-character identification number provided free of charge.

DUNS: Things to Remember Obtaining a DUNS number places your organization on their marketing list that is sold to other companies. You can request not to be added to this list during your application. Never pay $$$ to obtain a DUNS #. Other D&B products | services for a price. 2 – 3 day turnaround.
System for Award Management (SAM) Initial registration and annual registration to maintain eligibility. https://www.sam.gov , an official website of the U.S. government. There is no cost to use SAM. Used to: Register to do business with the U.S. Government. Update or renew your entity registration. Check status of an entity registration. Search for entity registration and exclusion records.
ALERT: NEW REQUIREMENT FOR REGISTRATION As of 06/11/18, submit a notarized letter to appoint entity administrator. Do this first! Complete the template and print on your entity’s letterhead. Sign the completed letter in the presence of a notary. SAM: Existing Registrations Note: If your entity is currently registered make sure to maintain | update registration annually. If you have not done so in a while, it is not too late, log in and update! “Entity Administrators and/or Entity Registration Representatives are responsible for ensuring the accuracy of an entity registration in SAM. An entity registration must be renewed every 365 days in order to remain active and will expire if it is not updated in a timely manner. An expired registration may affect the ability to do business with the Federal government.” Updating or renewing your registration information will take approximately 24 hours to become active. SAM: New Registrations Note: Online registration takes approximately 30 minutes to complete, and it can take up to 3 business days or up to 2 weeks before your SAM registration becomes active. You will be required to enter financial information, this will be maintained in a secure fashion.
