Rate of Change

Symbol for R.O.C is “a” The rate of change is the rate at which a graph changes its line. Rate of Change can be +, -, or 0 Positive Negative Zero Rate of change means… rise run

a = y2 – y1 x2 – x1 How to Calculate the R.O.C a = change in “y” The R.O.C is the quotient of the change in the dependent variable and the change in the independent variable. How to Calculate the R.O.C a = change in “y” change in “x Formula for R.O.C. a = y2 – y1 x2 – x1

Example: A(3,2) B(5,10) Step 1 write down your coordinates and label them (3,2) (5,10) x1 y1 x2 y2 Step 2 write the formula and plug in the numbers a = y2 – y1 x2 – x1 a =10 – 2 5 – 3 a = 8 2 a = 4 the rate of change

Practise: Calculate the r. o. c Practise: Calculate the r.o.c. You must show all steps to solve for “a” (0,0) and (4,12) 3 (1,8) and (5,40) 8 (1,7) and (6,42) 7 (-3,4) and (3,7) 1/2 (20,3) and (31,6) 3/11 (2,22) and(5,10) -4 (-5,5) and (-1,-1) -3/2 (-2,6) and(3,4) -2/5 (0,6) and (5,1) -1 Leave answers as fractions
