Compulsory Saturday morning Lesson Starter Compulsory Saturday morning classes in school for all 11-16 year olds. This was the headline in the Herald newspaper this morning. You and your classmates are not pleased. What can you do to persuade the Scottish Government that Saturday morning school is a bad idea?

Today we will… Describe the rights and responsibilities pressure groups have.

Success Criteria I can demonstrate my knowledge of rights and responsibilities by answering a knowledge question.

In a democracy pressure groups are entitled to basic rights: They have the right to criticise the government They have the right to hold meetings They have the right to protest They have the right to make their views known by using the media On your graffiti board, write down what you think the corresponding RESPONSIBILITY would be.

Rights and responsibilities of pressure groups (typical exam Q) To criticise the government To meet and protest To make other people aware of issues and problems (invite new members / support) To ensure that all arguments presented are honest and with the best intentions To protest peacefully and within the law and inform local government agencies of their intent to protest To ensure arguments are truthful and people are not forced or pressurised into joining or supporting them

Peer mark your answer with your shoulder partner. Question: Pressure groups play an important role in politics. Describe, in detail, ways in which pressure groups play a role in politics. (6 Marks) Keywords Protest Petitions Lobbying Use of Media Illegal Action Remember to fully explain what you mean and give examples or evidence where possible. Peer mark your answer with your shoulder partner.

Was I successful? I can demonstrate my knowledge of rights and responsibilities by answering a knowledge question.
