Types of Writing Foldable Due: Monday, November 4, 2013 30 points total

Types of Writing There are different types of writing: Narrative Informative/Explanatory Argumentative Procedural Research Based Response to Text (Literature)

Instructions: For this assignment, you will make a foldable for each of the different types of writing. Follow the order on the previous slide. You need 7 different colored sheets of paper (1 for each type of writing and 1 for the title page) Make sure to label each flat (the way we do for our prefixes). You may look up the definitions online, but your examples MUST be your own. You can’t copy from online or you will NOT get credit. You can type the information and cut it out, but the color of paper must match or be different from the foldable color (in other words, it can’t be white).

Example of the inside flap: Narrative Writing is writing that tells a story. It follows a sequence of plot and has a beginning, middle, and end. This would need more explanation. This is just to get you started. What is this writing typically used for? Answer this question. Illustration that represents or connects to the writing. You have to really think about this one. You can’t illustrate your writing; you have to be creative and illustrate the type of writing. Narrative Informative/Explanatory Argumentative Procedural Research Based Response to Text (Literature) Example of a narrative. Each example MUST be original. You have to writing your own example that follows the conventions for each writing type. For example, for narrative, you can write a short story, but it MUST have a beginning, middle, and end.

Suggestions Do not wait until the last minute! Neatness counts, so if your foldable is not up to 8th grade standards, you will not get a good grade. The research type of writing actually requires you to do research from a book. This takes time so plan accordingly. You must use citations (author, page) since you are using evidence from a book. The response to text/literature type of writing is based on a story from our literature book or a novel you’ve read. Again, this takes time. Plan accordingly. Take your time. You have 2 weeks to do this. You should focus on 1 flap a day so that you are actually learning the different types of writing, not just doing the assignment to do it. Ask questions. If you don’t understand something along the way, ask me. I am here to help you.
