Authoring Great Web Maps Introduction I will look at: Gathering or building your data Choosing a basemap Finding a balance between the basemap and your data Using transparency The importance of pop-ups The importance of metadata

Gathering or building data

Gathering or building data Is there an existing map that I can use?

Gathering or building data Is there an existing map that I can use? If not a completed map, are there layers available online that I can use? ArcGIS Online: Data Exploration with Smart Mapping Thursday, June 30 10:15 AM – 11:30 AM Room 14 A

Designing your map

Transparency Solid fill 75% transparency Darken your colors to compensate for the transparency Solid fill 75% transparency

Multi-scale Use this! Don’t try to get all of your information into one scale Reveal the story slowly as you zoom in

Pop-ups Use them! Don’t rely on a legend – Your symbols should be intuitive Users expect something to happen when they click on the map… …so use the pop-up to help you to simplify the map

Those pesky map details… You are not finished! Add a catchy title A good summary and description Decent credits Comprehensive tags
