ESL COUNSELING SERVICES

Services we provide for ESL students: Supportive counseling Conversation groups Academic advisement Selection with courses Assistance with registration Career guidance and assistance

Common issues seen in the office: Problems with course selection Concerns about choosing a major Concerns about adjusting to KBCC Problems with cultural adjustment to the US Understanding the eligibility for Tuition Assistance Program (TAP)

Intensive ESL Program: Cohort of up to 25 students take 5 courses together. Faculty collaborate to link courses through common student learning objectives, themes, and assignments. SD 10 and SD 11 courses are taught by ESL counselors from D-102 and focus on college planning and career exploration. Peer Mentors are assigned to each SD 10 and SD 11 course to provide constant support and guidance to ESL students.

ESL Peer Mentor Program Peer Mentors: Are selected students from the intensive ESL program. Serve all other currently enrolled ESL students in Intensive and free-standing ESL classes. Help with registration and schedule of classes. Help with choosing majors and planning careers. Share experiences as students at KCC. Speak many different languages including Spanish, French, Creole, Albanian, Russian, Georgian and English. There are opportunities each semester for ESL students from the Intensive program to apply for a position as a peer mentor.

Student Development Courses (SD 10/ SD 11): Taught by ESL counselors from ESL Counseling Services and includes peer mentors in each class. Teaches students necessary skills for attaining academic success. Provides students with academic support and advisement. Helps students develop their knowledge of the college and its resources. Helps ESL students with any personal/cultural adjustment issues to the USA. Each course is 1 real credit.

ESL Conversation Groups: Conversation Groups run each semester during lunch periods for all ESL students in Intensive and free-standing ESL courses. Offers an informal space for students to improve their English speaking skills. Offers students a chance to discuss adjustment issues to the college and the USA. Helps students connect with other ESL students.
