The role of HMGB1/TLR4 in tendon disease. The role of HMGB1/TLR4 in tendon disease. Schematic diagram illustrating the manner in which early tendinopathy may arise due tenocyte HMGB1 expression/release. An increased stress that a tendon cell experiences results in the release of HMGB1 from tenocytes, which interacts to drive a proinflammatory phenotype with aberrant tendon remodelling towards an early tendinopathic process.
