Coexistence CG Chair’s Report to the Singapore Meeting IEEE C802.20-03/82 Coexistence CG Chair’s Report to the Singapore Meeting IEEE 802.20 Meeting #4 Singapore, September 2003 Reza Arefi reza.arefi@ieee.org

Coexistence CG In July, 802.20 voted to create a “Coexistence CG” with the following charter. The CG discussed the issues in two conference calls and some email activity Study and create a consensus recommendation on how to address issues related to the coexistence of future 802.20 systems with other wireless technologies deployed in the licensed bands below 3.5GHz.

Progress The majority of CG participants had agreement on the following issues: Coexistence is an important issue and 802.20 needs to address it through performing coexistence analyses In order to do so, 802.20 needs to form a Task Group focusing on the coexistence issues 802.20 needs to produce a document on coexistence It was also generally agreed that 802.16.2 was a good model to follow

Open Issues Should “ability to coexist” with other technologies be an evaluation criterion? The issues are timing and order of creating the coexistence document vis a vis evaluation criteria, requirements, and PHY/MAC documents since coexistence studies need to use parameters that are technology-dependent Should RF performance information (TX mask, RX filters, etc.) needed for the coexistence analyses be included in the PHY/MAC specifications? Will the 802.20 coexistence document be a “Recommended Practice” as defined by 802? Or should it be part of the Standard (PHY/MAC)? The level of detail in CG’s recommendation to 802.20 Could the recommendation include some focus areas (interference scenarios, primary bands, etc.)? Or should this be left to the TG to decide?

The Plan The CG is scheduled to make its recommendation(s) to the WG by November meeting. Four more calls are scheduled: Call #3: Oct. 10, 2003, 1:00-2:00 PM EDT Call #4: Oct. 20, 2003, 1:00-2:00 PM EDT Call #5: Oct. 31, 2003, 1:00-2:00 PM EDT Call #6: Nov. 5, 2003, 1:00-2:00 PM EDT The call-in info will be distributed one week prior to each call through the reflector (stds-80220-coexistence@ieee.org)
