People who supported the United States expansion believed it was necessary due to population growth and the desire to own more land. People who opposed the United States expansion believed that it gave way to a more independent south and it increased slavery.”

According to document 4, “In order to strengthen themselves in Congress they needed more slave states” This clearly means that one of their primary goals for expanding is to become more independent in the eyes of Congress. Another reason why people supported the expansion is because in document 6 Senator Beveridge states, “will you remember today, that we but do what our fathers did? We but pitch the tents of liberty further westward, further southward.” This piece of evidence supports the dream of manifest destiny, to acquire territory along both the Atlantic and Pacific ocean”.
