DO NOW Take out your DBQ Packet on the Scientific Revolution. What are the four main topics you must cover in this essay?

DBQ: Part B- Essay 1. Need to know what you are suppose to write about or include in your essay. Always find that information on the last page of the DBQ packet.

DBQ: Part B- Essay Introduction 1st paragraph Briefly introduce all topics you will cover in your essay. In your own words. Student Example from Previous DBQ “In the 1800’s, the United States started expanding from beyond its borders to occupy other territories by purchasing them. The expansion in purchasing the territories took a while, however that did not stop territorial expansion. Some people had opposed the expansion of the country because of imperialism. Others had agreed to the expansion because gained more slave states.”

DBQ: Part B- Essay Introduction Student Example from Previous DBQ “During the nineteenth century in the United States American settlers began to advance westward in search of more territory. The great movement was referred to as “manifest destiny.” However, this movement began conflict among the American people between those who supported the United States expansion and those who contested the United States expansion. People who supported the United States expansion believed it was necessary due to population growth and the desire to own more land. People who opposed the United States expansion believed that it gave way to a more independent south and it increased slavery.”

Introduction: DBQ Scientific Revolution 1st and 2nd sentence…..think about the time period. In this case 1500’s-scientific revolution-new discoveries-new perspectives- people start to question Conflict: Changes due to conflict: Who benefits from the changes: Who is harmed from the changes:

DBQ: Part B- Essay Body Paragraphs Include: 1. Topic Sentence- what the paragraph will be about 2. Evidence- quotes or paraphrasing from the documents to support your topic sentence Always reference the document or author before or after the quote or paraphrase Examples: According to……. As stated in or by…….Author/Document says……..Author or Document explains….. 3. Explanation of Evidence used- explain why the piece of evidence you chose supports the topic sentence- in your own words

DBQ: Part B- Essay Body Paragraphs Student Sample from Previous DBQ “People can argue many reasons why there was support for expanding the United States during the 19th century. According to document 4, “In order to strengthen themselves in Congress they needed more slave states” This clearly means that one of their primary goals for expanding is to become more independent in the eyes of Congress. Another reason why people supported the expansion is because in document 6 Senator Beveridge states, “will you remember today, that we but do what our fathers did? We but pitch the tents of liberty further westward, further southward.” This piece of evidence supports the dream of manifest destiny, to acquire territory along both the Atlantic and Pacific ocean”.
