Militarism Europe had an arms race Countries were competing with each other to create large armies Developed plans for quick mobilization and war Everyone thought they could beat each other quickly

Alliances Many tangled alliances appeared all over Europe Was meant to stop war, actually helped cause war

Allies (Triple Entente) Central Powers Allies (Triple Entente) -Germany -Austria-Hungary -Ottoman Empire (Turkey) -France -Great Britain -Russia -Later USA joined

Imperialism European countries competed for colonies in Africa and Asia Almost went to war over these colonies Economics Countries competed over natural resources and markets to sell goods

Nationalism A deep devotion and pride in one’s nation Led to competition between Europe's major countries for power and territory
