Nation Building in the 19th Century Europe Introduction Task Process Evaluation Introduction The French Revolution and Napoleon spread Enlightenment ideas of liberty, equality, and the rule of law (based upon the Code) throughout much of Europe and Latin America. Ironically, Napoleon's goal to absorb other nations into a greater French empire had the unforseen effect of rekindling those nations' own spirit of nationalism. Despite the victory of monarchies in 1815, the embers of nationalism stoked by Napoleon would never be put out completely. In this project you will discover how nationalism led to the creation of new nation-states in 19th century Europe and follow up by creating a newspaper for your country reflecting the romantic spirit of the age.

Nation Building in the 19th Century Europe Introduction Task Process Evaluation Task Students will design a newspaper that captures the experience of a nation in 19th century Europe. The newspaper should specifically address and cover one of the following nations of 19th century Europe including: - France - Germany - Hungary (Austria) - Italy - Poland

Nation Building in the 19th Century Europe Introduction Task Process Evaluation Process Students will design and craft a 19th century newspaper from one of six designated European nations. The newspaper will demonstrate evidence of research, understanding of conflicts, and include various perspectives on the nation-building process. Students will complete the following tasks: 1. Invent a newspaper name, story titles, and fictional (by nation) bylines. 2. Write a lead story depicting a major event of the early-mid 19th century. 3. Include a general interest story (real or imagined) that reflects the nation's culture. 4. Craft an art, music, or literature feature story that captures some aspect of the romantic or later realist mood of the 19th century. 5. Create a political cartoon that demonstrates the group's insight into these tumultuous years in Europe. Resources Use the links provided on the following resources page Resource Links
