What is a sponge? Sponges are asymmetrical aquatic animals that have a variety of colors, shapes, and sizes.

Cnidarians and Sponges By Daisy Alanis, Kilmar Alvarez, and Gio Camarillo

Characteristics of Sponges There are many shapes, colors and sizes of sponges Saltwater sponges are red, orange, yellow, or blue. Also, the Fresh water sponges are usually brown or green. There are some sponges who can be really small, they could be smaller than a marble or larger than a car.

Reproduction of Sponges Are capable of sexual and asexual reproduction. Asexual Reproduction occurs mostly by budding. A bud forms on a sponge, then drops from the parent sponge to grow on its own. Most sponges have separate sexes but most sponges are hermaphrodites. The fertilization of an egg by a spermatozoon is peculiar in sponges in that a spermatozoon, after its release from a sponge, is carried by the water current until it is captured by a specialized flagellated cell called a choanocyte, or collar cell, in another sponge. Spermatozoon-Sperm cell

Habitat\Sponges Sponges are found in warm, shallow salt water near coastlines. Some are found at the ocean depths of 8,500 m or more. Sponge

Importance of Sponges The sponges can change the quality of the water, it could either change it to good or bad. The sponge also releases nitrogen gas which would go into the atmosphere, which can lower the risk of changing anything from the ecosystem.

Energy of Sponges and Cnidarians Sponges get their energy by filtering microscopic food particles Such as bacteria, algae, and protists Some Cnidarians sting their prey to get food. How does it work? When the stinging cells feels something in it’s area, it would discharge and catch it. The tentacles brings the food to the mouth. It will not eat all of it. The undigested food would get out of the mouth. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qqs2KlM268k

Habitat\Cnidarians They live in saltwater, but many types of hydras live in freshwater. Sea anemones and most jellyfish live as individual organisms. Anemones Jellyfish

Importance of Cnidarians Cnidarians help us a lot since coral is a Cnidarian and it also makes a habitat for fish. We use coral as Jewelry and more. The reefs helps us when people want to go fishing, boating, diving, etc. But we also need to take care of the water so there won’t be a lot of pollution because that's bad for that coral and the other creatures in the water.
